A damp winter’s day on Old Marylebone Road in 1974, looking towards a small Texaco filling station offering Green Shield Stamps and “Free gifts with 5 gallons.” To the left stands the dark-brick façade of the Paddington Chapel, a long-established nonconformist church that once anchored this corner of Marylebone. The mix of familiar cars — a Mini, a Beetle and a Vauxhall Victor bearing the livery of Sanders — adds to the unmistakably early-’70s feel. Everything in view here has since vanished. Both the church and the petrol station were swept away in later redevelopment, and today the entire site is occupied by Sentinel House, a large modern office block that bears no trace of the intimate, slightly scruffy streetscape captured in this photograph.
