The combination of rough shingle, eroding cliff face and modest buildings gives a strong sense of a resort still rooted in its rural surroundings rather than mass tourism.
The Old Barn Hotel has since disappeared, and the area has been substantially redeveloped, making this photograph a valuable record of East Wittering’s seafront before later change.
