Street view across South Square in Boston in 1956, centred on the Odeon Cinema, one of the town’s most prominent entertainment venues of the mid-20th century. The cinema’s distinctive façade, with tall vertical fins and bold Odeon lettering, reflects the streamlined modern style favoured by the chain in the 1930s. At the time of this photograph, the cinema was advertising the comedy Sailor Beware (1952), starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, with posters displayed beneath the canopy. A cyclist passes along the street while period cars are parked nearby, adding to the everyday activity of Boston’s town centre during the 1950s. The Odeon opened in 1937 and remained in use for fifty years before closing in 1987. It was later demolished in the 2000s, making this image a valuable record of a building that once played a central role in the town’s social life.
