This 1973 view looks across Oban Bay towards the North Pier, with the red-roofed MacBraynes harbour building standing prominently on the waterfront and McCaig’s Tower crowning the hill above. The pier building was erected in 1927 as the office for David MacBrayne Ltd., while the great ring of arches on Battery Hill had been started between 1897 and 1902 as John Stuart McCaig’s unfinished monument overlooking the town.
Other period details include the Columba Hotel to the left of the pier buildings and the line of waterfront properties stretching along the shore behind. Together they capture Oban in its long-established role as a west coast harbour town and ferry gateway, with the busy pier below and one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks rising above it.
