Oakeley Quarry at Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1977, with the road winding down towards a lone white house and the vast slate waste tips, quarry buildings and working terraces spreading across the mountainside beyond. The scene is full of stark industrial detail, from the dark spoil heaps and cuttings to the lines of telegraph poles, access roads and scattered quarry structures climbing the hill. By this time part of the old Oakeley site had reopened as the tourist attraction Gloddfa Ganol, giving this view an added sense of transition as Blaenau Ffestiniog’s slate landscape shifted from heavy industry towards heritage and visitors, while still retaining the harsh, raw appearance of an active quarrying district.
