View looking north along North Street in Taunton in 1959, taken from The Parade. A broad central garden planted with summer flowers divides the carriageways, giving this part of the town centre a formal, almost boulevard-like appearance typical of post-war civic planning.
Lined with commercial buildings and shops, North Street was one of Taunton’s principal shopping streets, with traffic circulating around the planted centre while pedestrians moved along the pavements on either side. Decorative street lamps, parked saloon cars and the well-maintained flowerbeds reflect the importance placed on presentation and civic pride in provincial town centres during the late 1950s.
The layout seen here has since been altered as traffic management and retail patterns changed, making this a record of North Street at a point when landscaping and open space still played a prominent role in the town’s central streetscape.
