This 1983 view shows NLA Tower in Croydon, the striking late-modern office block better known locally as the Thrupenny Bit because of its distinctive polygonal shape. Seen here behind its heavy concrete podium and alongside other contemporary buildings, the tower already had the unmistakable profile that made it one of Croydon’s best-known landmarks. The elevated walkways, rough-textured concrete and stark geometric forms capture the atmosphere of central Croydon during its high-rise redevelopment era, when the town centre was being reshaped with ambitious office architecture and raised pedestrian decks. The building is now known as No. 1 Croydon, making this a useful record of the tower under its earlier name and in its original commercial setting.
