Newgate Street, London, in the 1970s, looking west with the short-lived Paternoster Square development occupying the left-hand side of the view. Its slab-like office block and lower shopping podium, signed St Paul’s Shopping Centre, represent the post-war rebuilding that transformed the area around St Paul’s after wartime bomb damage; this scheme survived only until the 1990s, when it was swept away in favour of the present Paternoster Square. On the right rises the tower of Christ Church Greyfriars, all that remained after the rest of Wren’s church was left as a ruin, creating a striking contrast between old stonework and the modern commercial block opposite. Period traffic, including a red coupe and dark saloon, completes this quietly evocative view of a part of the City that has since changed almost beyond recognition.
