A busy afternoon scene in the International Area, viewed from above. Several national pavilions are clearly visible, including Morocco with its patterned arches and green-tiled roof in the foreground, and just behind it the domed concrete structures of the Jordan Pavilion. To the right of Morocco sits the pavilion of Sudan, with its small tower and decorative balcony. Nearby are the three pavilions of Japan, and Austria, part of the dense cluster of world cultures represented in this portion of the fairgrounds.
Overhead, the gondolas of the Swiss Sky Ride pass by, giving visitors an aerial tour of the site. A helpful dating clue appears in this image: the Sky Ride towers are painted white in 1964. By the second season, the towers were repainted in bright red and yellow.
As with many sections of the fair, this area combined food, architecture, shopping, and cultural displays in a compact space, offering visitors the chance to “tour the world” in a single afternoon — one of the fair’s most memorable promises.
