New York World’s Fair 1965

New York World’s Fair, 1965, viewed from above, looking across one of the busiest sections of the International Area. This elevated perspective shows the dense layout that made the fair both exciting and overwhelming, with national pavilions, corporate exhibits, and futuristic structures tightly packed together.

Near the center is the Billy Graham Pavilion with its distinctive tent-like roofline, while just behind it runs the long, zig-zag canopy of the main entrance. In front of the main entrance stands the American Express Pavilion. To the right we can see the pavilions of the Protestant & Orthodox Centre, Venezuela, China and the Caribbean.

The fairgrounds were intentionally designed to be navigated on foot, but many visitors underestimated the scale. On crowded days like the one seen here, movement could be slow, especially along the international boulevards where food stalls, entertainment, and cultural demonstrations regularly drew large crowds.

Though many of these buildings were temporary and disappeared after the fair closed in October 1965, the image captures a moment when nations gathered to present their identity, ambition, and optimism for what was repeatedly called the “World of Tomorrow.”

The Swiss Sky Ride towers were white in ’64 and red/yellow in ’65, a good way to date photos.
