New York World’s Fair 1964

Visitors walk toward the Unisphere, the soaring stainless-steel globe that became the fair’s defining symbol and a reflection of the era’s fascination with space, technology, and global cooperation. The towers of the New York State Pavilion can be seen in the distance to the left, while the right side of the scene includes a building with one of the fair’s more unusual stories: the structure originally intended as the Argentina Pavilion.

Argentina had planned a full exhibition but withdrew before the fair opened. Accounts vary as to why—political upheaval at home, financial uncertainty, and disagreements with the fair’s organisers all played a part. The building was finished but sat unused, an awkward emptiness in one of the prime locations of the International Area.

To avoid leaving it vacant, the fair hastily converted the pavilion into an art gallery during the first season. By the fair’s second year in 1965, it served as a restaurant, offering visitors a place to rest and eat while taking in the sights around them.
