Straight ahead is the Astral Fountain, a geometric metal framework surrounding jets of water that were illuminated at night, creating one of the fair’s more striking visual displays. Just to the left stands the New York State Pavilion, instantly recognisable by its elevated observation decks and the open-air “Tent of Tomorrow,” a bold, modernist statement designed by Philip Johnson.
After decades of neglect following the fair’s closure, the New York State Pavilion still survives and has become a beloved—if weathered—mid-century landmark. The Astral Fountain did not fare as well; its structure was removed after the fair, and its circular concrete foundation now serves as the site of the Maloof Skate Park, built in 2010. Today, skateboarders occupy the space where fountains once danced in sync with music and coloured light, creating a modern layer of history atop what was once a futuristic showpiece of 1960s imagination.
