Visitors make their way down one of the main boulevards toward the Unisphere, while overhead the Swiss-built cable cars glide across the fairgrounds—one of the most memorable sights of the exposition. In the centre of the walkway is one of the fair’s more unusual transportation experiments: the Greyhound Escorter.
These small electric vehicles could be rented by the hour, complete with a uniformed driver, and carried up to four passengers. The idea was to offer personalised transportation for those who found the fair too large to explore on foot. In practice, the Escorters proved expensive and somewhat impractical, and their limited success meant they were seen far less frequently than intended. After the fair closed, several Escorters were sold off and used in Atlantic City, but by the early 1980s they had vanished entirely. Of the 150 originally manufactured, only three are known to survive today.
Greyhound had better luck with its more affordable Glide-a-Ride trams, the brightly coloured road trains that shuttled thousands of visitors around the sprawling site. While the Escorters were an ambitious idea, it was the trams that became the everyday transport workhorses of the fair, remembered fondly by many who visited.
