Rising above the fairgrounds at 260 feet, the New York State Observation Towers offered sweeping panoramic views of the entire site. Visitors reached the top via the dramatic Sky Streak elevators, which travelled up the outside of the structure — a futuristic experience in itself. The smaller intermediate platform served refreshments, making the ride as much an attraction as the view. Admission was 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.
Today, the towers still stand in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, now weathered and unused. In 2019, a $24 million preservation grant was awarded to stabilize and restore the towers and add architectural lighting. While the restoration does not include rebuilding the elevators for public access, it marks the first major step toward preserving these striking landmarks rather than letting them disappear.
