This 1985 view looks along Museum Street in Bloomsbury towards the great colonnaded frontage of the British Museum, whose classical portico closes the vista at the far end of the street. On the left are a run of Victorian shopfronts and pubs, including The Plough with its Taylor Walker signs, while a sign for Mark Alistair Quality Butchers survives further along among the smaller ground-floor businesses. Parked at the kerb is a line of period cars, with a blue saloon nearest the camera, adding to the everyday texture of the scene. It is a strong record of Museum Street before later retail changes and streetscape alterations, when this stretch still had a distinctly traditional Bloomsbury look, with old pub fronts, independent shops and the British Museum looming just beyond.
