The Museum of British Transport at Clapham in 1971, with preserved tramway vehicles displayed indoors beneath the steel roof of the former bus garage. In the foreground is an open-top Douglas Southern Electric trailer from the Isle of Man, finished in rich red and cream and carrying its bold side destination lettering, while behind it stands a cream and green tramcar signed for Colwyn Bay and Rhos. The upper-deck seats, staircase, polished paintwork and period advertising, including the Sharps office furniture sign above, give the scene a wonderfully theatrical museum atmosphere. It is a fine record of the Clapham museum in its later years, showing how Britain’s urban and seaside tramway history was once presented in one of the country’s most memorable transport collections.
