Seen here towering above the fairgrounds near the main entrance, the Mormon Pavilion was one of the more distinctive structures at the World’s Fair. Its sharply vertical, modernist design and tall spire made it visible from long distances and immediately recognisable in photographs and postcards of the era.
The landscaped lawn in front of it was supposed to hold the ambitious World of Food Pavilion. Construction began, but financial troubles stalled the project. After legal disputes and mounting costs, the partially built structure was demolished and the site levelled — leaving this open expanse for the duration of the fair.
Inside the Mormon Pavilion, visitors could explore exhibits on the church’s beliefs, view displays about the early pioneers, and hear performances from the famed Tabernacle Choir. It was designed as both a place of information and quiet reflection, standing in noticeable contrast to many of the fair’s louder, more commercial attractions.
