A 1980s view in Hemel Hempstead looking south-east towards BP House from the top of the Moor End Road car park, with a blue Morris Marina parked in the foreground beneath the dramatic white concrete ramps and supports of the town’s circular double-helix multi-storey. Set within Geoffrey Jellicoe’s Water Gardens area, this striking late-1950s design, completed in 1962, was one of Hemel Hempstead’s most futuristic post-war structures, its sweeping decks crowned here by the orange-and-yellow globe feature and framed by the tall façade of BP House beyond. Both the car park and BP House have since been demolished, making this a particularly good record of the bold modernist town-centre planning once seen in this part of Hertfordshire.
