This photograph shows the historic headframe and surface works of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Discovered in 1891 by Mollie Kathleen Gortner—one of the only women credited with locating a major gold vein during the Cripple Creek gold rush—the mine went on to produce large quantities of ore and became a key part of the district’s mining boom. At its peak, Cripple Creek was one of America’s richest gold-producing regions, drawing prospectors, miners, and investors from across the country.
By the time this photo was taken in 1973, large-scale mining in the district had long declined, and the Mollie Kathleen site had transitioned to preservation and tourism. Today, it operates as one of Colorado’s most popular underground mine tours, taking visitors 1,000 feet below the surface in the same style of cage elevator once used by the miners who worked here.
