This 1981 view shows Micklegate Bar, York’s principal medieval gateway on the approach from Blossom Street, its twin rounded turrets and heraldic shields rising above the central arch. The gatehouse, whose lower fabric dates back to the 12th century with later medieval upper stages, was the ceremonial entrance for monarchs arriving in York, and the carved arms on the outer face were intended to underline that status. Emerging from the arch is the mustard Volvo 245 estate, while the blue Lancia Gamma Berlina stands in the foreground at right, adding two distinctive pieces of early-1980s traffic to the scene. The narrow side arch, weathered stonework and heavy fortification make this a much stronger reminder of York’s walled past than an ordinary street photograph.
