Street scene on Merton Street in Oxford in 1957, looking west through one of the city’s most architecturally rich college streets. On the left is Merton College Chapel, its stonework and buttresses forming a strong vertical presence along the street, with buildings of Corpus Christi College visible further along on the same side.
Both sides of the street are lined with historic college and domestic buildings, their gables, dormer windows and stone façades creating a tightly enclosed streetscape. Parked along the kerb are a number of period cars including an Austin A30 and a Morris Minor, while pedestrians move between colleges, giving a sense of everyday academic and city life in the post-war years.
Much of Merton Street remains largely unchanged today, making this a strong visual record of Oxford’s historic core before later traffic restrictions and modernisation altered how the street is used.
