Street view along Magdalen Street East in Oxford in 1959, centred on the Martyrs’ Memorial. The Gothic stone monument, completed in 1843 to commemorate the Oxford Martyrs of the 16th century, rises prominently behind its iron railings at the north end of St Giles’.
To the left are the buildings of Balliol College, while the tree-lined street stretches away towards the city centre. Period saloon cars pass along the roadway, reflecting the growing presence of motor traffic in Oxford during the post-war years, before later traffic controls and pedestrian measures reshaped this part of the city.
The Martyrs’ Memorial remains a key landmark today, making this image a clear record of its setting within Oxford’s streetscape in the late 1950s.
