This authentic 1970s colour photograph documents the Martello Tower in Seaford, East Sussex, as it appeared in 1971. The image provides a unique factual record of the coastal fortification before its major late-decade restoration. At the time of this photo, the tower featured a non-original top floor with residential-style windows and white doors, which has since been removed to return the scheduled monument to its original Napoleonic-era profile. The exterior displays signage for the Martello Tower Cafe and a bold orange Amusements sign, reflecting its mid-century use as a tourist attraction. Following the restoration, which included excavating the original moat, the building became the home of the Seaford Museum in April 1979. This archival shot is an essential resource for local historians and those interested in the architectural conservation of the South Coast.
