Markham Street, Chelsea, in 1976, looking north from King’s Road towards The Red House pub on Elystan Place at the far end of the street. The terrace of modest 19th-century houses, with their painted façades, iron railings and long run of chimney pots, gives this stretch of Chelsea a quieter, more residential character than the boutiques and traffic of King’s Road just behind the photographer. Parked along the kerb are several useful period details, including a red MGB GT in the foreground, a Renault 5, a Ford Cortina estate and a Simca 1000, while two figures talking on the pavement add to the everyday neighbourhood feel. It is a strong mid-1970s Chelsea street scene, balancing the ordinary parked cars and terraced houses of local life with the unmistakable urban backdrop of west London.
