Street-level view across Market Place in King’s Lynn in 1958, showing a row of small-scale commercial premises set within older town-centre buildings. The uneven rooflines, tall chimneys and mix of brick and stone façades reflect the layered development typical of King’s Lynn’s historic core.
On the left is The Medina Gallery, trading in antiques, with a plain painted frontage that contrasts with the more decorative shopfronts nearby. To the right is Mrs W. Betts, a long-established local business, its name picked out above the window. Parked along the edge of the square are several mid-1950s saloons, tightly spaced in front of the shops and helping to date the scene.
Much of Market Place has since been altered by redevelopment and changing retail patterns, making this a useful record of smaller independent traders operating from traditional premises in the late 1950s.
