This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures a candid moment of law enforcement at Marble Arch in 1964. The image features a Metropolitan Police officer on a black motorbike, registration 938 ALB, positioned on the stone-paved forecourt near the historic arch. In the background, we can see the Cumberland Hotel and the bustling London traffic which includes a variety of classic vehicles, such as a white Austin 1100 and a light blue Austin A40 Farina. The street corner is anchored by a “Timothy Whites” chemist, a familiar high-street name of the era, situated in a grand curved stone building. The wet patches on the pavement and the overcast sky add a realistic, atmospheric quality to this snapshot of mid-century urban life. This digital download is an excellent record of vintage policing and motoring history, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of documentary wall art.
