This 1972 view shows the car park at Rivington Services on the M61 in Lancashire, with a white Hillman Avenger in the foreground, a Humber Hawk beyond it and a red Volkswagen Beetle standing out against the wet tarmac. Other parked cars are scattered across the service area, while the low winter light and patches of snow on the hills beyond give the scene a cold, freshly-cleared feel. The contrast between the ordinary motorway car park and the Pennine backdrop is what makes the photograph especially effective, with the distant white-topped moorland adding far more atmosphere than most service-station views.
