This c1984 view shows the M25’s Gade Valley Viaduct under construction where it crosses the West Coast Main Line near Kings Langley station. Huge steel deck sections are already in place on the concrete piers, while a large lattice-boom crane towers above the site and the railway electrification gantries run beneath the unfinished span. The foreground is still raw with rubble, pipes, scrub and temporary fencing, giving a strong sense of the scale and disruption involved in building the new motorway across this busy rail corridor. More than a simple construction photograph, it captures a rare intermediate stage of one of the M25’s major structures, when the bridge deck was taking shape above one of Britain’s principal railway lines but before the finished road was in use.
