This 1966 view looks south from the footbridge at Toddington Services on the M1, showing the broad carriageways of Britain’s first motorway stretching away through open Bedfordshire countryside. A small mix of mid-1960s traffic is spread thinly across the road, including a blue Volkswagen Beetle, lorries and several saloons, while the service area slip roads and 70 mph signs are visible to the left. In the far distance, the twin chimneys on the skyline appear to belong to one of the brick or cement works in the industrial belt north of Luton, adding another period detail to the scene. The combination of light traffic, open verges, sparse roadside furniture and distant industry makes this a strong record of the M1 in its early years, when even major motorway service areas still felt relatively spacious and new.
