This 1960 photograph shows the M1 near Northampton, taken from the Towcester Road bridge and looking south towards the railway bridge, where a steam-hauled passenger train is crossing above the motorway. The image captures a remarkable overlap between two eras of British transport: the new motorway age below and the still-surviving age of main line steam above. On the road itself, the carriageways remain notably open and lightly engineered, with no central crash barriers, no lighting and only a narrow soft shoulder at the edge, all typical of the M1 as first built. The contrast between the modern motorway cutting and the traditional railway scene overhead makes this an especially strong period image, preserving a short-lived moment when Britain’s newest long-distance road could still be crossed by steam.
