The tightly packed terraces and hotels climbing the valley sides reflect Lynmouth’s development as a Victorian and Edwardian seaside resort, shaped by its dramatic coastal setting at the edge of Exmoor.
Parked cars line the roadside while pedestrians cross near the river, giving a sense of everyday holiday life in the late 1950s. The white-painted buildings in the foreground include guesthouses and small hotels catering to visitors, many of which were rebuilt or repaired following the devastating floods of August 1952.
This view therefore records Lynmouth during its post-flood recovery, after major reconstruction and the introduction of new flood defences that reshaped parts of the village in the years that followed.
