This 1982 view looks towards the Monument from Lower Thames Street, with Wren’s great column rising cleanly above a cluttered foreground of scaffolding, rebuilding and everyday City traffic. The contrast is what makes the image work so well: the pale Portland stone shaft and gilded finial of the Monument are framed by temporary building works on both sides, while below are pedestrians, parked cars, a scooter rider passing across the junction and a yellow-and-white Volkswagen camper van further back. The scene captures this part of the City at a time when older landmarks still had to compete visually with post-war redevelopment and yet more rebuilding, giving the photograph a strong sense of London as a city always half under repair. It is a particularly good documentary view of the Monument not as an isolated tourist sight, but as part of the working street life of the early 1980s.
