Roadside view on the outskirts of Ramsgate in 1956, showing the Lord of the Manor set back behind open fields. The pub’s isolated position at the time reflects the largely rural character of this part of Thanet before later suburban expansion.
In the foreground is a traditional black-and-white painted signpost, with fingerboards pointing towards Margate, Broadstairs and other nearby destinations, anchoring the scene firmly in the pre-motorway road network of east Kent. A 1950s saloon car passes along the road, adding a brief glimpse of contemporary traffic against an otherwise quiet landscape.
The surrounding fields seen here have since been built over, and the area is now part of Ramsgate’s developed outskirts, making this a useful record of the town’s changing edge during the mid-20th century.
