Looking west along London Wall from the Moorgate junction in 1978, this view captures the hard-edged City streetscape created by post-war redevelopment. The dark slab at the rear is Bastion House, completed in 1976 as part of the London Wall/Barbican office complex. The large curtain-wall block on the right appears to be St Alphage House, the 17-storey office tower completed in 1962 on Fore Street, built above the remains of St Alphage London Wall. On the left is another glass-and-steel office block of the same redevelopment era, linked visually by the raised pedestrian walkway crossing the scene. Much of this composition has now vanished: St Alphage House was demolished after 2013, and the wider area has been comprehensively rebuilt as London Wall Place, leaving this photograph as a stark record of the City’s late-1970s concrete-and-curtain-wall phase.
