This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the high-water mark of post-war modernist architecture along London Wall in 1967. Beyond the prominent St Alphage House in the foreground, the next skyscraper in the sequence is Lee House, another of the eighteen-storey slab blocks designed to create a unified modernist corridor through the City. In a striking juxtaposition of old and new, the medieval ruins of the original St Alphage Church and a section of the Roman London Wall are visible at the base of the towering skyscrapers. The image also captures the distinctive “twin-fluorescent” street lighting columns and the concrete pedway system that was intended to separate pedestrians from the heavy traffic of the era. Most of the buildings shown here have since been demolished to make way for the more contemporary developments of the 21st century.
