This 1971 panorama looks across the Thames to the City and central London skyline at a moment of striking contrast between old landmarks and new development. Dominating the right-hand side is St Paul’s Cathedral, while below it the river curves past Blackfriars Bridge and the north-bank Embankment, where the moored training ships HMS Chrysanthemum and HMS President can be seen. On the south bank at lower right stands the distinctive OXO Tower, while nearby the London Weekend Television building is still under construction, wrapped in scaffolding. Across the wider view are a number of post-war office blocks and towers beginning to reshape London’s skyline, making this a particularly good record of the capital at the start of the 1970s, when Victorian domes, river traffic and modern redevelopment all sat side by side.
