Photographed from the upper deck of a bus turning out of Dartmouth Road, this view captures Forest Hill’s busy local shopping parade in the early 1970s. On the left stands the ABC cinema, a familiar landmark for generations of locals, its distinctive vertical sign visible above the canopy. A little further along, Broomfields the Bakers occupies a prominent corner site; the long-established south London chain would later be acquired by Greggs in 1976, marking the beginning of Greggs’ steady expansion into the capital.
Across the road, the shopfront of Bendy & Co, traditional “oil and colour men,” can still be seen at No. 22 Dartmouth Road. Further up the parade, past the striped awnings and 1930s façades, sits a branch of Woolworths, then still a major fixture on high streets across Britain.
The street scene is full of everyday 1970s detail: a red Austin 1100 and Ford Transit heading up the hill, shoppers making their way between bus stops, and a South Circular road sign in the foreground.
