This 1980 view of Argyll Street captures the London Palladium in everyday West End use, its columned frontage and vertical neon sign standing out among a tight run of commercial buildings. The theatre entrance is busy with pedestrians beneath the canopy, while period details such as the Palladium Advance Booking sign, Palladium Cellars, L Travel Limited and the large Ladbrokes awning on the right help root the scene firmly in its time. Cars, vans and clusters of people fill the street, giving the image the feel of a working entertainment district rather than a staged publicity shot. It is a strong record of Argyll Street before later changes to shopfronts and surrounding premises, when the Palladium still dominated this stretch of the West End as one of London’s best-known variety and theatre venues.
