This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the complex engineering process of dismantling Rennie’s London Bridge in 1969. The image shows the historic stone arches being supported by a massive overhead steel gantry or truss system, allowing the granite blocks to be meticulously removed and numbered for their relocation to Arizona. Rust-coloured steel sheet piling cofferdams are visible in the River Thames, protecting the base of the piers during the work. Along the top of the masonry, orange protective hoardings indicate the site of active demolition, while the buildings of the City’s northern bank remain visible in the background. This industrial scene documents a unique moment when one of the world’s most famous bridges was literally being suspended in mid-air during its deconstruction.
