This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures a unique moment in engineering history: the dismantling of the 19th-century London Bridge in 1969. In the foreground, the white and blue passenger boat ‘Abercorn’ creates a wake as it heads downriver. Behind it, the stone arches of John Rennie’s 1831 bridge are visible, partially encased in modern steel gantry and trusses as workmen carefully deconstruct the granite blocks for shipment to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Two red double-decker buses can be seen crossing the remaining span, while the distant silhouette of Tower Bridge is framed through one of the arches.
