LNER B17 No. 61633 Kimbolton Castle at Cambridge in 1956, captured moving through the station area with a rake of maroon and cream coaching stock and a heavy plume of smoke trailing behind. The photograph has a strong sense of motion, with the 4-6-0’s long boiler, outside cylinders and large driving wheels clearly visible as it heads past sidings, telegraph poles and industrial buildings on the edge of the railway. No. 61633 was one of the B17 “Sandringham” or “Footballer/Castle” class express locomotives associated with former Great Eastern lines, making Cambridge an especially fitting setting. This is a fine action view from the last years of East Anglian steam, showing one of the LNER’s distinctive mixed-traffic express engines still at work before the class disappeared.
