Llechwedd Slate Caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1977, showing the steep slate waste tips, stone retaining walls, steps, pipes and planted rockwork around the visitor area before later redevelopment. Cars and a coach can be seen above the slate workings, giving a sense of the site as a developing tourist attraction within the historic slate landscape of North Wales. In 1979, this area was used for the construction of the Deep Mine Tour, which took visitors underground into the former Llechwedd slate workings; the modern Llechwedd attraction continues to include the Deep Mine Tour, now operated as part of Zip World Llechwedd. This colour photograph captures the site in transition, combining industrial slate remains, early heritage tourism, dramatic quarry scenery and the visitor traffic of late-1970s Blaenau Ffestiniog.
