Lincoln in 1956, with the great west towers and long roofline of Lincoln Cathedral rising above the city while a line of railway wagons stands in the foreground below a web of telegraph wires. The view is rich in mid-century detail, from the open and covered goods wagons to the industrial buildings and yard clutter beneath the hillside, while the church spire, dense roofscape and cathedral precincts show how dramatically the old city climbed above the railway. Particularly striking is the large brick building at left carrying painted lettering including “P.F.”, with shopfront-style signs at ground level, helping to root the scene in the everyday commercial Lincoln that sat beneath one of England’s most dominant medieval skylines. The contrast between the ancient cathedral and the workaday railway goods stock gives the photograph much of its character.
