This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the industrious yet historic atmosphere of the Limehouse waterfront along the River Thames in 1969. The focal point on the riverbank is the narrow, white-painted facade of The Grapes pub at 76 Narrow Street, a celebrated maritime tavern dating back to 1583 that famously inspired the “Six Jolly Fellowship Porters” in Charles Dickens’s Our Mutual Friend. To its right, the premises of “W.J. Woodward Fisher Ltd,” prominent watermen and lightermen of the era, are visible with their distinctive dark blue signage. In the foreground, the dark hull of a cargo ship dominates the water, alongside several traditional Thames lighters moored at the staithes. The skyline beyond the historic wharves reflects the post-war redevelopment of the East End, with several grey concrete high-rise residential blocks rising above the older brick chimneys.
