This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the enduring pageantry of the Life Guards at Horse Guards Parade in 1968. Two sentries of the Household Cavalry are seen mounted on striking black horses, wearing their traditional ceremonial uniform: red tunics, white plumed silver helmets, and white buckskin breeches. One guard is captured in the act of adjusting his equipment or signaling, his drawn sword catching the light. Surrounding the soldiers is a group of tourists dressed in typical late-sixties fashion, including a woman carrying a distinctive pink “Selfridges” shopping bag and a man with a vintage camera around his neck. The classical stone courtyard and arched entryways of the Horse Guards building, designed by William Kent in the mid-18th century, provide a grand historical backdrop to this daily military ritual. This digital download is a wonderful record of London’s royal heritage and 1960s social life, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vibrant vintage wall art.
