A lively winter scene in Leicester Square, London in 1973, with crowds drifting between cinemas, shops, and the famous red phone boxes beside the square. On the hoardings ahead, the Odeon is advertising Walt Disney’s Robin Hood, newly released that year. To the left, the building carrying the large Carlsberg sign is part of the entertainment and restaurant frontage that once dominated this side of the square. A lone street performer occupies the roadway, his small amplifier placed on the tarmac, capturing the mix of traffic-free moments and informal entertainment that often characterised Leicester Square in the early 1970s. The bare plane trees and deep shadows give the whole scene that distinctly London winter feel.
