Lambeth Palace Gatehouse, London, in 1974, with the great Tudor brick entrance tower standing beside the church of St Mary-at-Lambeth on the far side of the road from Lambeth Bridge. Built in the late 15th century for Archbishop Morton, the gatehouse is one of the most striking survivals of the palace’s long medieval and Tudor history, its battlemented towers and arched entrance contrasting with the flint and stone church beside it. Scaffolding can be seen behind the church, while passing traffic includes a white estate car and a cluster of everyday saloons, giving this ancient ecclesiastical setting a very ordinary 1970s London context. It is a fine view of Lambeth Palace before later changes to the surrounding roads and streetscape altered the feel of this stretch of the south bank.
