This authentic colour photograph from 1966 captures a memorable scene outside the Lady Jane boutique on Carnaby Street during one of the most talked-about episodes of the Swinging Sixties. Opened in May that year, Lady Jane caused an immediate sensation when live models began changing in the shop window, attracting such large crowds that the police stepped in and the display was halted after just three days. Here, a group of onlookers studies the decorated window, which is filled with floral displays and bright orange clothing. The glass is covered with newspaper cuttings and photographs recording the controversy. At the right-hand edge of the scene, part of Irvine Sellar’s Tom Cat, a men’s fashion shop, is also visible.
