Lady Jane Again and The Fox’s Lair, Carnaby Street, London, 1972 shows two linked boutiques at No. 42, their illuminated fascia split between Lady Jane Again! for her and The Fox’s Lair for him. The display is packed with shaggy coats, dresses and menswear beneath a dark, glossy shopfront, while a passer-by pauses in front of the entrance and the striped brickwork above reminds us that much of Carnaby Street still sat within older Soho buildings rather than purpose-built modern retail blocks. Lady Jane was one of Carnaby Street’s most famous fashion names, founded in 1966 by Henry Moss and Harry Fox, and after the partners split Harry Fox continued with the original business while also opening related Carnaby Street shops including Lady Jane Again. Contemporary references identify The Fox’s Lair as the menswear counterpart here in the early 1970s, making this a particularly good snapshot of Carnaby Street’s his-and-hers boutique culture at the point when the first wave of Swinging London style had matured into something more flamboyant and theatrical.
