This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the striking bronze statue “La Délivrance” at Henly’s Corner in Finchley during 1964. Created by the French sculptor Guillaume Émile de l’Hommeau, the statue depicts a naked woman standing on tiptoe on a globe with her arms raised in a gesture of triumph and liberation. The work was originally intended to commemorate the first Allied victory of World War I and was purchased by Lord Rothermere for this prominent North London junction. The low-angle shot emphasizes the statue’s dynamic silhouette against a bright blue sky dotted with soft white clouds. In the background, a mid-century street lamp and the brick facades of modern apartment blocks ground the monument in its urban setting.
